Tet Festival

“The Tết Festival of Southern California is recognized as the world’s largest Tết Festival outside of Vietnam. Helping preserve culture, the festival boasts 100,000+ visitors and dozens of booths in a span of a three day weekend event. Visitors are emersed with a vibrant array of traditional foods, live entertainment, festive games, and customs celebrating the new year.

Tết is the most observed holiday within Vietnamese culture. It celebrates the Lunar New Year, the beginning of Spring, and a way to start fresh.”

They even have a free shuttle service running on Saturday from 12pm-10pm and Sunday from 12pm-9pm if you don’t want to drive! Also, on Saturday ONLY, every visiting family will get a free gift!

3rd Annual Irvine Korean Festival

“The Annual Irvine Korean Cultural Festival is an event designed to commemorate Korean immigration to the United States, which began in 1903. The festival also represents an opportunity to celebrate and share Korean cultural heritage and artistic traditions with the broader Irvine community and Orange County. The Festival is a culture-filled extravaganza replete with fine Korean cuisine, games, art, music, and entertainment.”

Busan West Film Festival

“Over the course of three days, November 11 – 13, 2011, Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, recognized as one of the premiere film schools in the United States, will showcase Asian contemporary and classic feature films and documentaries. The film festival will showcase Pan-Asian films selected directly from the 2011 Busan International Film Festival, the largest Asian film festival in the world which takes place in Busan, South Korea. The program will feature invited directors representing the films, along with an Opening Night Gala, a Retrospective evening after-party and a Closing Night reception — all designed to showcase Pan-Asian culture through food, music and décor. Q&A sessions led by renowned film scholars will guide the audiences in conversation with directors and actors who join us for Busan West.”

We don’t usually post college club events, but since there are so few Polynesian events around, this one might be interesting to you!

“Aloha everyone! Pua’ikeana, Chapman [University]‘s Hawai’i club will be holding our annual Polynesian Showcase from 7pm-8:30pm on November 10 in Attallah Piazza! This year’s theme, Hiki No, means “can do” or “together”. This means a lot to us, as we are working together as a club to put together this event to share with you.

Come join us to watch dance performances, listen to music, and to have fun!

Best thing about it, IT’S FREE!!! Invite anyone and everyone, this is our way of sharing the Aloha spirit with Chapman and the community.”

Noguchi: California Legacy

“Isamu Noguchi (b. Los Angeles, 1904; d. New York, 1988) is an internationally celebrated Japanese-American artist and designer. Noguchi: California Legacy is comprised of three parts that examine the impact Noguchi had in California: 1) California Scenario: The Courage of the Imagination based on Noguchi’s South Coast Plaza sculpture garden commissioned by Henry T. Segerstrom thirty years ago; 2) What is Sculpture? Akari from the Venice Biennale, from the 1986 Venice Biennale exhibit in which Noguchi, that year’s United States Representative, exhibited his Akari light sculptures; and 3) Noguchi at Gemini G.E.L., consisting of the sculpture multiples that Noguchi created in 1982 at atelier Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles.”

Fukui Sister City Exhibit

“The Muckenthaler Cultural Center celebrates Fullerton ’s Sister City Fukui, Japan with a new exhibition of graphics by artists from both cities. Artwork by members of the Fukui chapter of JAGDA, the Japan Graphic Designers Association, will be exhibited with digital artwork and prints by Fullerton based artists to explore the beauty and heritage of each city.

Participating artists from Fullerton include Anthony Trasport, Michael Eckerson Cliff Cramp , Candace and Michael Magoski, Richard McMillan, Hala Swearingen, Randall Chambers, and Mark Mendez.

The artists from Fukui are Ryoji Ohashi, Hajime Sakai, Kazuo Suzuki, Susumu Tanaka, Katsumi Nakano, Toshihide Nishibata, Kenichi Hashimoto, Yoshifumi Maeda, Rioichi Matzda, Michiaki Matsuyama, Hiroko Myohchin, and Hajime Yoshimura.”
