Master Balinese artists-in-residence and senior company members utilize traditional Balinese hands-on teaching methods. Balinese Jazz Guitar

“Often regarded as one of the fastest guitarists of Indonesia, Balawan and his band, Batuan Ethnic Fusion, combines the traditional Balinese gamelan music with jazz fusion. Well-known for his ability to play a double-neck guitar, Balawan has developed an eight-fingered-touch technique, also known as touch-tapping. Balawan has released three albums and tours internationally.”

“Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance brings the art and artists of this special Indonesian island to San Francisco so that you can experience firsthand its culture, beliefs, and practices. See not only artworks but explore the context in which they were made and used, as the museum comes alive with the kinds of music and performance that fill Balinese ritual life.

The 131 artworks on view—many borrowed from international collections and never before seen in the U.S.—range from simple, yet deftly woven images of the rice goddess to elaborately carved and gilded chairs. Shadow puppetry, gamelan performances, masked dances, and more provide a museum experience as unique and mesmerizing as Bali itself.”

Ambrosia of Immortality

“Compare these two epic tales by Shadowlight Productions. Ambrosia of Immortality is a Balinese version of Churning the Milky Ocean, where gods and demons join forces to create ambrosia and then fight over possession of it. (40min.) Monkey King at Spider Cave is inspired by an episode from Journey to the West, the beloved 16th Century Chinese epic adventure of a Buddhist High Priest and his animal disciples in their quest to bring the Buddhist scriptures to China. Both screenings will include footage of both the full show and a behind-the-scenes documentary. Monkey King at Spider Cave is told in Mandarin with English narration. (48 min.)”

“Internationally acclaimed Bay Area ensemble Gamelan Sekar Jaya presents a performance with jegogs, dramatic bamboo marimbas with tubes up to eight feet long. Noted for its rhythmic energy, unusual four-tone scale and powerful sound, the jegog originated in western Bali. Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s jegog ensemble is the only one of its kind in the Western hemisphere. Director I Dewa Putu Berata is a renowned composer and the director of Bali’s famed Çudamani ensemble. Gamelan Sekar Jaya is the only non-Balinese group to receive the Dharma Kusuma, Bali’s highest award for artistic achievement. In its music it explores a wide range of forms, from traditional Balinese pieces to cutting-edge compositions, and hosts long-term residencies by Bali’s finest musicians and dancers.”

Bamboo Music of Bali with Samuel Wantman

“Watch as member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Balinese music expert Sam Wantman demonstrates how Balinese bamboo instruments are made and performed. Learn about different instruments, tunings, and scales, and the path that bamboo music has carved through Bali in the past 150 years. I Made Arnawa (Gamelan Sekar Jaya Guest Music Director), a prolific composer, performer, and teacher, joins Wantman for this interactive demonstration. Arnawa comes from the village of Tunjuk in West Bali, famed for its traditions in music, dance, and theater. He has performed and taught internationally, including tours to Australia, India, several European countries, and the U.S. He has composed extensively for gamelan, and has won numerous awards in the Bali Arts Festival.”
