2nd Annual Cambodian Arts & Culture Exhibition

“On display will be Cambodian court dance and costuming, drawing, shadow puppets, music and musical instruments, textiles, dressmaking, weddings, cooking, and games. Additionally, Jeffrey Weaver, of the J. Paul Getty Museum and curator of the forthcoming exhibition – “Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia,” will give a talk about the exhibition.”

Fundraiser hosted by anti-domestic violence organizations Maitri (San Francisco) and Sahara (Los Angeles), Broken Images is a postmodernist play by award-winning playwright Girish Karnad. It stars famous activist and actress Shabana Azmi, winner of the International Gandhi Peace Prize and Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum. Come watch this critically acclaimed play and simultaneously help combat violence against women! Open to all, so don’t be afraid to come if you’re not South Asian. :)

Leading Northern California desi film festival also featuring documentaries from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Tibet, UK, and the US. Films include Slackistan,  controversial political comedy Four Lions starring actor Riz Ahmed (Shifty, The Road to Guantanamo) and many more! Don’t miss  an opportunity to socialize with actress Tanishtha Chatterjee (Brick Lane) or actor Hammad Khan (Slackistan), filmmakers, and others afterwards at the parties and closing reception! Raas Garba – 10/23/10, Pomona

It’s that time of the year again – Navratri! Head on over to Cal Poly Pomona for an exciting night full of competitions (grand prizes of diamonds for best garba and dress!) and, of course, Raas Garba!

Garba is a high-energy Indian form of dance performed usually during the  nine-day Hindu festival Navatri. One dances around the Goddess Durga in circular fashion to symbolize the Hindu view of the cyclical nature of time, and the idea that the Goddess (Durga) is unchanging as she is the only unmoving object. It is a very popular event among Indians and always full of culture, color, fun, and food!

  • When: Saturday, October 23. Doors open at 8:00 PM.
